Yankees Cameraman Hit In The Face During Game Suffered Orbital Fracture

On Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, a cameraman positioned near the New York Yankees’ dugout on the first-base side was accidentally struck in the head by an errant throw.

The throw came from Baltimore Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson, who was in a rush to complete a double play in the fifth inning.

The cameraman, Pete Stendel from YES Network, suffered a broken eye socket as a result of the impact. He is now at home resting, according to a statement released by the YES Network on Thursday.

After being hit, Stendel was immediately taken to the hospital. Late on Wednesday, YES Network reported that he was conscious and undergoing tests. An update provided by the network on Thursday revealed that Stendel has an orbital fracture but has since been released from the hospital.

During the incident, the game was temporarily halted for approximately 17 minutes. The Yankees’ athletic training staff and medical personnel attended to Stendel in the camera well while Baltimore players retreated to their dugout. Both Yankees and Orioles players, including Henderson, watched with evident concern in the quiet stadium.

Eventually, Stendel was securely fastened to a stretcher and transported off the field. As he departed, he raised a ‘peace sign,’ receiving a round of applause from the crowd.

“Every time that a ball goes over the first baseman or even a foul ball from the hitter, you don’t want to see it going towards a fan. It just happened to be in the wrong spot, and I hope he’s doing all right,” Henderson said following his team’s 6-3 victory. “My prayers go out to him. I’m just thankful for the guys that rushed over there to him to help him.”
