A woman from Oregon, identified as Jessica Christine Lindstrom, went missing during a hike in north Phoenix. Authorities have confirmed that she has been found deceased, and it is suspected that the cause of her death is related to the extreme heat.
Jessica, 34, began her hike around 8:30 a.m. on a Friday. After approximately nine hours had passed, the Phoenix police declared her missing. The Phoenix Fire Department promptly initiated a search operation, employing drones and technical rescue teams during the effort. Eventually, Jessica’s body was discovered on a remote trail on the north side of the Deem Hills Recreation Area.
While the exact cause of her death will be determined by the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner, preliminary information suggests that she succumbed to the intense heat while hiking. Jessica, a registered nurse in Oregon, was visiting family in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria at the time of the incident.
“Unfortunately, Ms. Lindstrom was in town from Oregon, where it doesn’t get this hot,” said Fire Department Capt. Scott Douglas.
Maricopa County has witnessed a concerning number of heat-associated fatalities this year. As of July 29, there have been 39 confirmed heat-related deaths, with an additional 312 cases under investigation. Comparatively, during the same period last year, the county reported 42 confirmed heat-related deaths and 282 cases under investigation.
