On Tuesday, a sheriff’s office in northeast Utah reported that a woman passed away after she pushed another climber to safety in Utah when an ice column split and fell.
According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, three people were climbing Raven Falls on Sunday when the column fell, resulting in the hospitalization of one man, while the third climber was unscathed and managed to drive to Duchesne to seek help by calling 911.
The office stated, “The climber that pushed her fellow climber out of the way of the falling ice was trapped underneath two huge blocks of ice and did not survive.”
Search and rescue crews from Utah and Wasatch County, the Duchesne City Volunteer Fire Department, and volunteer ice climbers aided in locating the woman’s body on Monday afternoon. The office noted that the 21-year-old climber was fortunate to have escaped and sought assistance, and her life was potentially saved by the push.
As per the office, a 34-year-old man fell 40 feet and was transported to a hospital with severe injuries. His status was not known on Tuesday.
It was unclear whether any of the climbers had any relationship with each other.
