Virginia Elementary Students Ingest Fentanyl-Laced Gummy Bears, Require Medical Attention

WVVA

In Amherst, Virginia, on Tuesday, seven elementary school students fell ill after consuming gummy bears from a sandwich bag that later tested positive for fentanyl, according to local authorities. Five of the students were taken to the hospital for medical attention and have since recovered, officials reported.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Lt. Dallas Hill of the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of two individuals in connection with the incident. The gummy bears, brought to Central Elementary School by a fourth-grade student, led to emergency services being notified when the students became unwell. The sheriff’s office believes the incident was unintentional.

While the candies were subjected to testing, the sandwich bag itself tested positive for fentanyl, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office said. Clifford Dugan, Jr., and Nicole Sanders have both been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Additionally, Sanders faces an extra charge of possession of a controlled substance, and Dugan is confronted with a separate charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resulting in his being held without bond.

The affected students exhibited symp toms such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, and muscle spasms. All children have fully recovered, and according to Wells, “all the parents indicate they are doing well today.” The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to identify anyone else who may have come into contact with the bag at school.
