A teenager from Grantsville, Utah, has been sentenced to a minimum of 100 years in prison for the 2020 murder of his mother and three siblings.
On Wednesday, 19-year-old C.J. Haynie was handed down sentences of 25 years to life for each of the deaths and was also ordered to pay $28,000 in restitution.
Haynie had pleaded guilty last year to four counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted aggravated murder for the killings of his mother and siblings.
In January 2020, when Haynie was 16 years old, he fatally shot his 52-year-old mother, Consuelo Alejandra Haynie, along with his 15-year-old sister Alexis Haynie, 14-year-old brother Matthew Haynie, and 12-year-old sister Milan Haynie. The charge of attempted aggravated murder is for Haynie shooting his father in the leg when he came home after the initial killings.
The consecutive sentences for the four murder counts indicate that Haynie will likely spend the remainder of his life incarcerated, while the sentence for attempted murder will run concurrently.
During the hearing, it was announced that the specifics of the prison terms will be determined by the Board of Pardons. Haynie has never provided an explanation for why he committed such a horrific act against his own family.
