HOUSTON – New details have emerged in the perplexing case of a Houston man who resurfaced alive after reportedly disappearing as a teenager eight years ago.
During a press conference held Thursday afternoon, the Houston Police Department said Rudy Farias, now 25, had not been missing during the entire eight-year period as previously believed by the public.
According to an HPD Lieutenant, in 2015, when Farias was 17, he returned home the day after his family reported him missing. He had vanished while walking his dogs. It was also revealed that Farias had been in contact with HPD before, but he and his mother, Janie Santana, had provided authorities with false names and birth dates.
“The mother, Rudy’s mother, continued to deceive the police by insisting that he was still missing,” added the lieutenant.
Authorities said they have engaged adult protective services to assist Farias in his recovery, but his interview with officials did not indicate any incidents of sexual abuse or other trauma.
Farias, by his own choice, is safe with his mother, police said.
Shortly after the Texas Center for the Missing announced on Sunday that Farias had been found alive, questions began to arise regarding the case. A previous statement from the family, shared with TRK, stated, “My son Rudy is receiving the care he needs to overcome his trauma, but at this time, he is nonverbal and not able to communicate with us. We are asking for privacy during this difficult time but will share more details as Rudy continues to heal.”
Farias was taken to the hospital after purportedly being discovered unresponsive outside a church with cuts and bruises across his body, Farias’ mother told KTRK.
However, neighbors this week contradicted the mother’s claim, stating that they had seen Farias in the neighborhood over the past few years and had even spent time with him.
“He used to come into my garage, hang out with my cousin, son, and daughter,” claimed neighbor Kisha Ross, according to ABC 13. “That boy has never been missing.”
In another bizarre development, Houston community activist Quanell X calimed Rudy had been a ‘sex slave’ for his mother.
“She would ask him to play daddy, she told him that he had to be the husband,” Quanell X told reporters. “I heard horrific things from that young man. And I did not want him to see me start shedding tears, but I couldn’t hold back the tears because of the things he was saying to us — the detective and myself.”
“No child, no child should ever be treated like that by your own mother,” he added.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office currently has no plans to press charges against Farias or Santana for filing false reports, police said.
