The Russian government has cautioned the United States against engaging in “hostile” actions near its borders and expressed its intention to retrieve the wreckage of an American drone that crashed into the Black Sea following a dramatic encounter with Russian fighter jets.
On Wednesday, Kyiv stated that the incident demonstrated the Kremlin’s desire to escalate the war.
According to the US military, a Russian fighter jet dumped fuel on and collided with the propeller of the MQ-9 Reaper on Tuesday, resulting in the drone being brought down in international waters. Washington claimed it was a “blatant breach of international law” and summoned Moscow’s ambassador as a result.
Russia rejected claims that its planes had “contact” with the drone and placed the blame on the US, accusing it of conducting surveillance close to Russian airspace to assist Ukraine.
Russian officials expressed optimism on Wednesday about recovering the drone’s remnants, but admitted the task would be a challenge.
