ILLINOIS – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the human remains discovered in a storage unit in west central Illinois last fall belong to Richard R. Young, the former police chief of Maquon, a village located approximately 150 miles southwest of Chicago. According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, DNA from the decomposed remains was taken and compared to samples from Young’s relatives to confirm the identity.
Marcy Oglesby, a 50-year-old resident of Maquon, has been charged with first-degree murder and concealing the death of a person in connection with the case. She has pleaded not guilty and is being held in custody at the Knox County Jail. Oglesby initially claimed that the foul odor coming from the storage unit was from a dead opossum, but later admitted to concealing Young’s body inside a large box.
The exact cause of Young’s death is unknown, but a toxicology report showed that he had a high level of a toxic chemical commonly found in eyedrops in his system, according to WQAD-TV. Knox County Sheriff’s Department Detective Jeremy Moore testified that Oglesby was reportedly in a relationship with Young, as reported by WHFB-TV.
Denise Kruzan, Young’s former sister-in-law, expressed shock and disbelief at the heinous crime, stating to WQAD that “it’s hard to wrap your head around that somebody could be so evil.”
