A shooting broke out at Margaret Jenkins Park in southeast Houston early Saturday, resulting in the death of a pregnant woman and injuries to four others, according to her family’s account to KTRK.
“A total of 36 shots came in from that technology,” stated Assistant Chief E. Garcia during a press briefing, referring to the reports received by the Houston Police Department through its ShotSpotter technology.
It appears that a dispute between groups of people at the park escalated, leading some individuals to draw firearms and open fire, police said.
Among the wounded were two suspected shooters, who along with another injured person, were taken to a local hospital for treatment. All three are reported to be in stable condition. One individual sustained a graze wound but opted not to seek hospitalization.
The victim who was killed in the shooting was identified as 21-year-old Autumn Vallian, who was attending a birthday party with her friends and family when the altercation broke out. As she tried to leave the scene, she was shot and killed. Vallian, five months pregnant, had been looking forward to the joys of motherhood, her mother said.
The two shooting suspects are currently under detention at the hospital, according to Assistant Chief E. Garcia. Investigations are working to determine if there are any additional suspects involved in the incident.
