HOUSTON – According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a 4-year-old girl was fatally shot by her 3-year-old sister in Texas in what appears to be an unintentional incident.
During a gathering of five adults and two children in a Houston apartment on Sunday, the children were left unsupervised in a bedroom. The 3-year-old accessed a loaded semiautomatic pistol, resulting in a gunshot that alerted the family. Upon entering the room, they discovered the 4-year-old on the floor and unresponsive.
The sheriff expressed his sorrow at the “tragic” incident, which he says could have been “easily prevented.”
“It just seems like another tragic story of another child gaining access to a firearm and hurting someone else,” Gonzalez said. “Our hearts are broken. Our deputies are pretty shaken up.”
Gonzalez stated that the investigation is still ongoing, but charges may be brought against individuals for failing to secure the weapon.
