A gunman opened fire Thursday morning at Perry High School in Iowa, resulting in the death of a 6th grade student — five others were injured, law enforcement officials said.
Police say the suspected shooter has succumbed to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The scene has now been declared “secured” by Dallas County, Iowa, officials.
The active shooting incident was reported at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time, said Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante.
The shooter has been identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, WHO 13 reported. Butler apparently posted a selfie on TikTok before the shooting with the caption, “Now we wait.” Butler was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a pistol, officials said.
Last month, Butler posted a video of himself playing with sticks, pretending to be a gun.
Sheriff Infante said an officer swiftly responded to the school within seven minutes, discovering “multiple gunshot victims.” The sheriff refrained from providing specific details about the identities of the victims.
Police clearing the school found an IED and rendered it safe.
Authorities are likely to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
