Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has agreed to pay $725 million in a settlement related to privacy violations that impacted users over the last 16 years. U.S. residents who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, can submit a claim for a monetary payout, provided they do so before August 25, 2023, on a website set up for this purpose.
Multiple lawsuits were filed against Facebook by users who alleged that the company shared their data w ith third-party entities such as advertisers and data brokers, without their consent. The privacy violations came to light after the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, when it was discovered that the firm had accessed Facebook user data to profile voters.
Meta has refuted any allegations of wrongdoing or liability under the settlement, as stated on the class-action website created for this purpose. However, users who file a claim on the settlement website or by mailing a printed claim to a specified address may receive a portion of the settlement amount, which will depend on the number of claims submitted.
The website does not specify the payout amount that users will receive or the timeline for receiving the funds. The earliest possible payout date is later this year.
