Milwaukee, Wisconsin (MPD) — On Febuary 21, 2023, around 1:40 p.m. Milwaukee Police officers tried to stop a vehicle that was driving without license plates near 70th and Thurston. The vehicle initially stopped, but then took off as officers approached. The vehicle was spotted again near 60th and Thurston, and the pursuit began.
It ended near 91st and Silver Spring when the fleeing vehicle ran a red light and crashed into another motorist. The suspect, 31-year-old Herman Lucas, got out and started running with a gun in his hand. Lucas failed to listen to police commands to drop his weapon.
While attempting to scale a fence, Lucas fell to the ground. Lucas then turned towards the officer and the officer fired his gun, striking him multiple times.
Lucas died from his injuries. His weapon, a semi-automatic firearm, was recovered at the scene.
