Long Beach, California (LBPD) — On Nov. 8, 2023, at approximately 8:57 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 300 block of 69th Way regarding a stabbing call. Officers were advised by dispatch that the suspect stabbed his mother, a female adult victim, who was hiding in a room with another relative who was uninjured. Upon arrival, officers contacted the male adult suspect inside of a residence holding a knife. Officers ordered the suspect to drop the knife; the suspect refused and raised the knife while advancing toward the officer, at which point the officer-involved shooting occurred.
The preliminary investigation indicates the suspect stabbed the victim prior to officers’ arrival, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital. The suspect was later discovered to also have stab wounds to his upper body. The suspect, identified as Eriberto Penaloza, a 38-year-old resident of Long Beach, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Fire department personnel also transported the injured mother to a local hospital for her non-life-threatening injuries. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to investigate. No officers were injured.
