LUCKNOW, India – On Sunday, officials reported a shocking attack caught live on television in northern India that led to the shooting deaths of Atiq Ahmad, a former Indian lawmaker convicted of kidnapping and facing charges for murder and assault, and his brother Ashraf. The two siblings were being escorted by the police to a hospital for a medical checkup in Prayagraj city of Uttar Pradesh state on Saturday evening when three individuals disguised as journalists attacked them from close range.
After the attack, the assailants surrendered to the police promptly, and one of them chanted “Jai Shri Ram” or “Hail Lord Ram.” This slogan has become a rallying cry for Hindu nationalists in their campaign against Muslims.
