Florida Baby Dies After Teen Mom Adds Fentanyl To Bottle
NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper announced that a incident occurred last month where an infant’s teenage mother unknowingly added fentanyl to her 9-month-old child’s bottle.
On June 26, following a call reporting the baby’s absence of breath and pulse, deputies arrived at a home in Callahan. Despite the deputy’s attempts to revive the child through CPR, the child passed away later at a hospital in Jacksonville.
Investigators began questioning the 17-year-old mother who initially denied knowing what happened.
On Tuesday, Leeper revealed that the mother made a confession, disclosing that on June 26, she was tired and wished to nap, so she prepared a bottle for the child. She filled the bottle with formula and what she thought was cocaine, Leeper said.
The substance was indeed fentanyl, the medical examiner’s office confirmed. The child had consumed a lethal amount of fentanyl equivalent to what could kill ten people.
The mother now faces charges of aggravated manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance.
Due to Marsy’s Law, the law enforcement agency is legally prohibited from disclosing the names of both the child and the mother involved.
