DESTIN, Fla. – Authorities have made public a portion of the body camera video footage capturing the scene at a Gulf Coast beach in Florida where Ryan Mallett, a former NFL player, died in an apparent drowning incident earlier this week.
Responding to public inquiries regarding the water conditions that may have contributed to the fatal incident, the sheriff addressed the matter, stating that there were no rip currents present in the area.
The sheriff’s statement comes in the wake of the National Weather Service linking rip currents to several deaths occurring over a nine-day period, between June 15 and 24, at nearby Panama City Beach on the Florida panhandle.

According to information provided by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the beach near Gulf Shore Drive in Destin shortly after 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday afternoon in response to the drowning incident. Upon arrival, they discovered a group of individuals in the water near the second sandbar, reportedly struggling to make their way back to the shore. Mallett, who was part of the group, was unresponsive when lifeguards retrieved him.
Despite the efforts made to save him, Mallett did not regain consciousness, and he was pronounced dead at the Destin Emergency Room, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office.
