Authorities in Las Vegas confirmed on Monday that the passing of a 20-year-old UNLV football player, who was discovered unresponsive in his studio apartment back in February, was attributed to a heart condition.
According to a statement from the Clark County coroner’s office, Ryan Keeler underwent an autopsy which revealed he had a heart ailment known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle. The examination concluded that he succumbed to a fatal irregular heartbeat on February 20.
The coroner’s office officially ruled his death as natural.
Following Keeler’s death, Las Vegas police initiated an investigation that remained open until the medical examiner’s report was released. The case is now considered closed.
Barry Odom, the head coach of UNLV, had publicly announced Keeler’s passing, highlighting the player’s exceptional achievements as both a student and an athlete.
Originally from Chicago, Keeler had joined UNLV after transferring from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
