In the opening statements of the hitman conspiracy trial, the prosecutor said Florida dentist Charlie Adelson allegedly hired three hitmen to murder FSU law professor and his ex-brother-in-law, Dan Markel. The state claims this was a “highly emotionally charged situation,” referring to the relationship between Adelson and Markel, as there was an ongoing custody battle between the two families. The state says Adelson said his divorce gift was to get his ex-wife “a TV because hiring a hitman was too expensive.” Adelson faces up to life in prison if convicted.
