On Monday, authorities declared that a suspect had been apprehended in the fatal shooting of Catholic Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell.
O’Connell, a 69-year-old member of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, was discovered deceased inside his Hacienda Heights home on Janlu Avenue around 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that O’Connell had been killed by a single gunshot wound to the upper torso and that the incident was being investigated as a homicide.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna held a press conference at 3 p.m. on Monday to announce the arrest, but no information regarding the suspect or their link to O’Connell was made public.
O’Connell had served in the Los Angeles Archdiocese since 1979 and hailed from County Cork, Ireland.
