After a nearly two-week ordeal, an American nurse and her child have been freed from captivity in Haiti, as reported by the nonprofit organization El Roi Haiti.
“It is with a heart of gratitude and immense joy that we at El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of our staff member and friend, Alix Dorsainvil and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince, Haiti,” the group wrote in a statement. “Today we are praising God for answered prayer!”
Dorsainvil, a nurse who is married to the founder and director of the organization, Sandro Dorsainvil, along with their child, were abducted last month from the organization’s premises near Port-au-Prince.
The mother and child were engaged in community service when the incident occurred. The US State Department previously said they had maintained communication with Haitian authorities.
The State Department issued a brief statement Wednesday; “Out of respect for their privacy, we will allow individuals to speak for themselves if and when they feel ready. As you can imagine, these individuals have been through a very difficult ordeal, both physically and mentally.”
There were no immediate details on the condition of Dorsainvil or her child — or where they were held during the time.
