50-year-old Tou Ger Xiong, an Hmong American comedian and activist from Minnesota, was abducted and killed as he was on a trip to Medellin, Colombia.
Xiong arrived in Colombia on Nov. 29, authorities in Colombia say. Then, on Dec. 10, he phoned a friend in the U.S., saying that he met up with a woman that he had met online, adding that he had been abducted and was being held for a $2,000 ransom.
When friends and family couldn’t provide the money, Xiong was killed. Authorities say that his body, filled with stab wounds, was discovered in a wooded location on Monday.
This year, there have been 253 abductions of people for the purposes of attempted extortion in Colombia. Additionally, three American tourists, including Xiong, have been killed in Colombia in December, alone.
An investigation is now continuing.
