Authorities in Fort Worth have released a body cam recording of an incident that occurred on Monday evening. It involved an officer shooting a woman.
On May 22, around 11:30 p.m., officers answered to a call about a suicidal woman. This was at an apartment complex, near Loop 820 and I-30.
20-year-old Kaitlyn Balogun had contacted authorities to inform them that she was bleeding and wanted to hurt herself.
When officers first knocked on the door, no one answered. However, when they knocked again, Balogun finally answered.
The recording depicted officers going inside, and the woman also going back inside, running to get a knife.
Officials say that after Balogun went after an officer with the knife, screaming, “Shoot me,” as the officer had her weapon drawn.
“I don’t want to shoot you. Drop the knife. I don’t want to shoot you!” the officer can be heard advising.
The woman continued to point the knife at the officer who had no more room to back away from her.
The officer had believed that Balogun posed a threat. Thus, she fired her weapon one time, striking the woman in her hip, police say.
Balogun was transported to a medical facility and has now been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.
The city of Fort Worth is now vowing to work on strengthening their department’s mental health crisis intervention team that was started in 2017.
