After resurfacing online, a bill brought to light by North Carolina state legislators, that is said to have made abortions punishable by death, has caused controversy.
Last February, Republican state Rep. Larry Pittman sponsored House Bill 158. It noted that an individual that “seeks to destroy the life of another person, by any means, at any stage of life, or succeeds in doing so, shall be held accountable for attempted murder or first-degree murder.”
If it would have become law, it would have also allowed people to use deadly force when protecting the life of an individual who is “born or unborn,” the document noted.
Even though the bill was drafted in 2021, many people have shared in on Twitter. A non-profit that encourages youth involvement in politics, Voters of Tomorrow, had its founder, Santiago Mayer, share the draft on July 18, 2022.
“Republicans in North Carolina just introduced a bill that’d make abortion punishable with death,” he posted with an image of the bill. At least 23,000 retweeted his tweet. Posts like this were also shared on Facebook and Instagram.
As many people online thought that the bill was recently drafted, the dated bill got little encouragement from state lawmakers and didn’t move forward.
Two days following the tweet, other users made it known that the bill was drafted over a year ago. Mayer then confessed that the bill had been lingering in a committee for a while.
After the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month, many states have made abortions illegal. However, they are still legal in North Carolina. This month, Governor Roy Cooper issued an executive order to protect abortion procedures in that state.
