A teen died after an outdoor high school basketball practice. Now, the teen’s family has reached a $10 million settlement with Clayton County Public Schools in Georgia.

Imani Bell died after practicing on a hot day back in August 2019.

Last year, the family filed a civil case, and the settlement is said to be the biggest one of its kind.

Bell was a junior at Elite Scholars Academy when she died. She had been outside with her varsity basketball team’s madatory outdoor practice. She collapsed as she was running up the football stadium steps.

The temperature that day was between 96 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit, and the heat index placed the temperature at between 101 and 106, said the family’s lawyer.

Bell’s autopsy report showed that her cause of death was a heart attack that came about after physical exertion in a high heat atmosphere.

The lawsuit noted that Imani didn’t have any underlying health concerns that would have resulted in her death.

Two basketball coaches were charged with murder in the case. LaRosa Walker-Asekere and Dwight Palmer were indicted on second-degree murder charges, second-degree child cruelty, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless conduct.

The two were had been released on bond, but it isn’t clear if a trial date has been scheduled.
