Shirley Hughes, the mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims, Tony Hughes, has expressed her opposition of Halloween costumes linked to the serial killer. She says that it ‘traumatizes’ the relatives of the victims.
Tony Hughes was a deaf victim of Dahmer’s, one of the 17 people that he killed. Shirley Hughes says that she is appalled by the “evil” Halloween costumes and thinks that they exploit the victims of the cannibal serial killer.
After Netflix aired the series “Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” many people have chosen costumes that reflect who Dahmer was.
The costumes have the killer’s identifiable spectacles, wigs that look like his real hair, and short-sleeve button-down shirts.
On May 24, 1991, Hughes, 31, was out dancing at a gay bar in Milwaukee. Dahmer had picked him up, taken him to his residence, drugged him, cut up his body, and kept his skull.
“When it first happened, I thought I would lose my mind,” Ms. Hughes stated back then.
She has also criticized Netflix.
“If Netflix hadn’t streamed the show, none of the families would be re-victimized…and then there’d be no Dahmer costumes this year.”
She added that Dahmer was nothing but evil and doesn’t see how people that would dress as him could sleep peacefully at night.
In 1992, Dahmer was given a life sentence in prison but was killed by a prisoner two years following that. Most of the people Dahmer killed were Black or gay.
After receiving a lot of backlash last week, many stores pulled the Dahmer-linked costumes off of their shelves. However, more people have gone online to shop for blonde wigs, retro-style tops, and wire-rimmed glasses.
