A mom in Florida has stated that a “voodoo” spell caused her to hurt her children.
During an investigation, authorities learned that one of her children, a 3-year-old, died after drinking bleach. An 8-year-old suffered other injuries, as well.
On Mother’s Day, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in a parking lot at Poinciana Pentecostal Church.
They then located Joanne Zephir, 36, who was unresponsive in the front seat of the car. Her 3-year-old daughter was found unconscious in a car seat. Then, her 8-year-old son was discovered in the street, close to the entrance of the church.
A bottle of bleach was recovered from inside of the car.
Authorities say that the 3-year-old passed away at a medical facility, and the 8-year-old was treated and released to relatives.
Reportedly, Zephir was already being sought by authorities for attempted murder and aggravated battery in Orange County. She stated to relatives that she was going to surrender to authorities on those charges. However, she wanted to have quality time with her children prior to that. She then left with the children from a relative’s residence.
Detectives say that Zephir later contacted a family member, disclosing that she had killed the 3-year-old. She added that the 8-year-old would be dead, too. She said that she was going to kill herself, as well.
Police arrived before she could hurt her son or herself any further.
When interviewed, Zephir confessed to forcing each child to drink bleach out of a makeshift glass. She added that she had strangled the 3-year-old. Zephir said that the victim in her attempted murder case, in Orange County, had put a “voodoo” spell on her. This caused her to her harm her kids.
“We’re waiting for the medical examiner’s office’s findings before we file the actual murder charges on behalf of the death of the child,” said a sheriff.
Police say that Zephir also admitted to attempted murder in the other case. Authorities didn’t release any information about that matter.
An investigation is continuing.
