On Friday, leaked screenshots between Elon Musk, owner of Tesla, and Bill Gates surfaced on Twitter.
There has been a longtime rumor about Gates having a short position in Tesla’s stock. This means Gates anticipates the value of Tesla decreasing. Gates was so confidant in the value of Tesla falling, he bet half a billion dollars that it would happen.
Musk addressed Gates through a text message. “Do you still have a half billion dollar short position against Tesla?” asked Musk.
“Sorry to say I haven’t closed it out,” Gates responds. Gates sent an additional message “I would like to discuss philanthropy possibilities.”.
Musk shut down the philanthropy conversation with a final text message, “Sorry, but I cannot take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you have a massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change.”
Musk confirmed the leaked text messages are legitimate on his twitter account.
