The body of a 32-year-old Georgia man was shipped via FedEx, against protocol, and has been missing for 3 years.
Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office shipped a box containing the remains of 32-year-old Jeffrey Merriweather. A lab in St. Louis, Missouri was supposed to receive the shipment to conduct additional tests on the indifferent case.
Merriweather’s body had decomposed to an almost full skeletal shape not even two weeks after he was shot and killed.
The box, weighing 18.6 pounds, never made it to Missouri and has yet to be located.
The use of FedEx to ship human remains is against the department’s protocol. Human bodies are normally transported across state lines by airline.
FedEx also said using its services to send human remains is prohibited.
Merriweather’s family is still searching for answers 3 years after his body went missing.
In addition to not conducting a review of the circumstances, the Medical Examiner’s Office has not publicly addressed the situation.
